When a D.A.R.E. goes too far

Another day, another phone call.  This time it was Gayla on the other end of the line, “Mom will you and Pop meet me at the school in a few minutes?”

“Of course, has something happened to the boys?” I questioned.

She replied, “The principal has called the drug police in to talk to the boys.  My God what has Trey done now?”

“It isn’t Trey this time, it is Coty” she responded in a confused tone.

“Well, they have made a huge mistake.”

“No Mom I can’t go into it now, just meet me at the school.”

Needless to say my little car sprouted wings and upon arriving at the school we found Coty in the hall with tear filled eyes.

“Hi Grammy” he whimpered. “Grammy, am I going to jail?”

My heart was breaking, my mind running wild “no sweetie we will get this all taken care of.”

The door to the office opened and we were beckoned into the office where we would meet face-to-face with the principle and another teacher. I felt like a kid being sent to the office, I could only imagine how the kid felt being sent to the office in such a way.

We were told that Coty had sold a green liquid to another boy on the bus that morning and had paid his brother $1 to keep quiet.

When arriving at school another boy began bragging about the snake poison he’d bought from Coty that morning.

Coty and his friend had been summoned to the office to talk to the police. When ask individually the boys had repeated the same story. The green substance was a poison meant to kill snakes that were living in the boys play house.

Pop laughed and the principal gave him a stern look and replied “this is not funny Grandpa.”

“The hell it isn’t.  You’ve said that Coty is too shy, and a little slow because of the shyness.  What he’s done doesn’t seem so slow to me.  How many kids can sell a tiny bottle of green water for $5 and then turn his money and make it work for him?”

“We had bought him a science kit for Christmas and he uses cake coloring to make potions like Harry Potter.  Jody found one on the bar and told him he should not leave them sitting around because the dogs might get poisoned from them.

We thought by telling him that, he would be more likely to put them picked up. Coty thought what Grammy said was true so in reality, it is her fault don’t you think?”

Pop giving another resounding laugh.

At this point Gayla and I could kill him.

To bring this story to a close, I can tell you Coty did not spend the night in jail and Pop made it out of the office alive not before he had everyone in stitches.

Oh yes, the science kit disappeared never to be seen again.

And to this day, Coty won’t even share gum on the bus.
