Help Prevent Colon Cancer
University of Arizona research found that men with high levels of selenium are six times less likely to develop colon cancer.
Eating one Brazil nut a day can raise your selenium to the recommended daily level. Research shows eating two brazil nuts daily can lead to other health benefits as well, like enhancing the immune system. Research has also proven that too much of the micronutrient can be toxic therefore you should limit your intake to a handful per day.
A recent study in the American Clinical Journal Nutrition shows that 60 volunteers divided into three groups were studied for 12 weeks on the effects of brazil nuts on the human body. One group ate 2 nuts per day, the second group took 100- microgram selenium supplement, the third group took a placebo.
The group eating the brazil nuts selenium level was 64.2%, the selenium supplement groups increase was 61%, and the placebo groups level was 5.3%.
