Homeless, Cold And Hungry

We now have homeless, cold and hungry people on our streets all across the U.S. and Canada. So why is it that every time you turn on the TV or pick up a paper there is an ad asking that you donate money, for the homeless in other countries?

In British Columbia, Canada alone there have been people die due to the cold and one women burned to death while trying to stay warm with candles.

The woman, who was known as Tracey, had refused to leave the bed she had made under her overturned shopping cart lined with cardboard, bedsheets and blankets.

The workers gave her a thick quilt, a coat and some hot chocolate, but the woman cried when they wouldn’t give her a candle to stay warm because it wasn’t safe, Ms. Silvergieter said.

"She didn’t want to leave her possessions behind to go to a shelter," Ms. Silvergieter said. "To somebody on the street that’s their whole world, that’s all they have."

There are more people on the streets then ever before in my lifetime, we are talking whole families. Through no fault of their own, they have lost their homes, health care and most important of all their jobs.

Where is our compassion for our neighbors, friends and family? If you have money, food or shelter why not help those that live on the streets where you live.

I found an article you should read this will make you stop and think of what you could do to help.

Available resources are severely strained due the economic crisis, while demand for food assistance has increased by 18 percent over the past year.

The findings of the survey paint a grim picture of increasing social hardship in the United States. "At this time of significant economic downturn, the issues of hunger and homelessness in America are more prevalent than ever," stated the Miami Mayor and Conference President Manny Diaz in a press release.

The ominous nature of these developments is highlighted by an answer from Cleveland, which noted, "Some agencies report that they are seeing families requesting assistance who were formerly donors to the pantry."
