Gun Control – Keep guns out of the hands of 11-year-olds

Kenzie Houk and daughters

An 11-year-old Pennsylvania boy killed his father’s pregnant girlfriend, Kenzie Houk, last week with his own youth model shotgun, a smaller-sized gun designed specifically for children.

Jordan Brown went downstairs from his bedroom with the gun hidden in a blanket, shot Houk in the head while she lay in bed, then took the bus with her 7-year-old daughter to school.

The boy reportedly got the youth-sized shotgun as a Christmas present, and used it to win a turkey shoot on Valentine’s Day.

Personally, I’m in favor of having the boys dad take up residence in the cell right next to his son. What ever would make a parent think it’s a good idea to get an 11-year-old a gun in the first place? Around our house and in my family – thirteen was always the age to begin considering the privilege of owning a gun – and then it was dependent on the maturity of the kid. But for a parent to buy a gun for an eleven-year-old and to keep the gun AND ammo in an unsafe location where children would have access to it whenever he wanted, what about that is right?

It’s cases like this that will keep building a greater platform for some type of gun control in this country and in a way I think some control would be reassuring – however, is there really a test or certification that would keep guns out of the hands of idiots?

This is a horrible tragedy – one that could have been avoided. Two lives and one turkey shoot – was the gun really worth it?
