Twins At Sixty

/network.nationalpost.comAt sixty Ranjit Hayer gave birth to twins, after three miscarriages and going through menopause she decided to have in vitro fertilization.

Doctors in Canada where Mrs. Hayer now lives refused her request, due to her age and medical problems that might occur. She returned to India for the procedure.

The twins were born 7 weeks early and needed to stay in the hospital for 4 weeks, one of the babies has to have special breathing equipment.

After giving birth the mother hemorrhaged and had to have her uterus removed, she is also now a diabetic and has high blood pressure.

Juliet Guichon, a medical ethicist at the University of Calgary, said it is no surprise that Canadian physicians refused to complete the procedure on a 60-year-old woman who had already completed menopause.

"Pregnancy is not a benign condition and indeed it can lead to death, although that happens very rarely in Canada. Even in the best case, pregnancy is something that has to be managed medically," she said. "To do this in a 60-year-old who is post-menopausal — so nature has said the time for this has passed — is a risky venture from the perspective of caring for the woman."

What do you think,  about the ethical side of this? When these boy’s are graduating for high school their parents will be almost 80.

My daughter has twin boys and I know how hard it was on her the first three years. As the boys got older and I moved back to Indiana and I would keep them on the weekends to give her a break.

This woman will not have a mother to help and my guess is that most of her family is still in India. I am sorry, but when do our wants become more important than a babies future.
