Mid-Life Singles 101 – I’m taking notes!
You know, a person doesn’t have to go far to realize they suck at being single. There – it’s out! I suck at single life, I suck at dating, I suck at getting to know new people – throughout my “single life” both old and new, I start off with pretty good. Then, when it comes to a point where I feel I may have a real interest in a person, I get nervous about some things and begin making mistakes.
Well, mistakes is a relative term really.
What’s really cool now though is online personal ads. I LIKE the idea of people shopping. I like the idea of getting to know a person in a virtual sense before proceeding to real world dating. It sure makes weeding out the incompatibles much easier.
I do have to wonder though – when people get to be my age, do they not do their homework?
Just this morning on the news, they were discussing the age group that currently has the fastest growth in reported STD cases is 50 – 70. Can you believe that?
They did say something that really caught my attention – “It’s ok to have sex at 60 but think and act like a 16-year-old and protect yourself.”
Now, I’ve worked with medical groups on the topic of sexually transmitted diseases. To my amazement, many doctors say it’s not necessary for a person who has herpes or HPV so I have to wonder how many singles are running around, dating and going under the advice of doctors with this common belief?
My question:
Let’s say hypothetically, YOU are single and have an interest in someone. You don’t realize it but they have herpes or HPV.
When would be the optimal time for them to disclose this sort of information to you?
- Do you want to know right away, before you begin developing a keen interest in the person?
- Do you want them to wait until you get to know one another to see if it’s moving that direction?
- Do you want know just before the heat of the moment?
- Do you agree with doctors and this isn’t something that really has to be told at all as long as it’s under control?
Things sure are different than in the good old days – so many things to consider – especially when it’s your divorced with kids to consider.
Should life be this difficult and confusing?
