And I thought I was a harsh parent

punishment

A Tennessee mother fed up with her daughter’s misbehavior took an unusual tack in for latest punishment, making her stand on a busy street corner with an attention-getting sign.

Tashara Wilkins, 13, held a sign Sunday reading, “I don’t obey my parents, I’m a liar. I steal from my mom. I have a bad attitude.”

I’ll admit, I’ve gone so far as to tell my kids if they didn’t stop fighting I was going to make them stand in the front yard and hold hands. But I don’t think I would ever consider going to this extreme as a form of punishment.

Is it me or is this just a wee bit over the top?

That is way over the top. When I was a kid in school, teachers were a bit abusive to the kids. I remember one of my teachers took the kids that did not turn in the homework. She made signs for them to wear over their necks and she took them out to the sidewalk and had them march up and down the street.

Kids believe what you tell them about themselves. If you tell them they’re bad, they’re worthless, they’re stupid, etc, then they’ll believe it. I tell my kids that I love them, but I don’t like the choice that they made. We talk about choices and making decisions. My husband has started something new with our kids. He asks them if they’re a liar. He tells them they’re not a liar; they’re a truth teller that messed up.
