Obama picks up two more celeb endorsements

Barack Obama has landed two new celeb supporters: Nicole Richie and beau Joel Madden.

Along with newborn daughter Harlow, the two hit this weekend’s Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival in Palm Springs, where Madden sported an Obama T-shirt.

Asked if they’re backing the Democrat, he told Usmagazine.com. “Yes, we are.”
“He is a good man, he is cool,” Madden added. “He is just a great person overall.”

I’ve never really put much stock into what celebrities support which candidate, but I have to wonder, does it have any bearing on the decision of others?

Do you pay much attention to celebrity endorsements or do you do your own homework on the candidates?

Angelina Jolie Leaves Her Mark in Washington

angelina jolie in washington

It sounds like Angelina Jolie and her passion for humanitarian causes stole the show in Washington yesterday when she spoke out on Iraq and it’s refugees at the Council on Foreign Relations.

The actress’s appearance on a panel discussing the plight of more than 1 million Iraqi child refugees was less upbeat than that of the U.S. officials who testified before two Senate committees yesterday.

"This population we’re talking about is the future of Iraq," said Jolie, who has traveled twice to Iraq over the past year, as well as to Syria to visit Iraqi refugees. "So to reach them now, to help deal with their trauma and refocus their minds on a possible future should absolutely be one of our top priorities. We need these kids. . . . We need them to rebuild their country, to stabilize their country and eventually lead their country."

Jolie gently scolded the Bush administration for its slow follow-through on absorbing Iraqi refugees. The United States took in 374 Iraqis in January, 444 in February and 751 in March — in a year in which it has pledged to take in 12,000 Iraqi refugees, she noted.

While I can’t agree with Jolie in that the U.S. should be taking in more refugees that already heavily burdened taxpayers would have to support, I can understand a sense of anger toward our government and how we are handling a variety of situations.

Perhaps Jolie doesn’t feel the pressure that so many lower income families feel, perhaps Brangelina should take a walk through small town American in times when disaster hasn’t struck - but when jobs are being lost, groceries are on the rise, gas is unaffordable and see that we must first fix American before we can begin fixing other countries.

I’m interested in hearing from others.  Do other American’s see our country as being in dire straights?  Are you believing the Bush Administration in that we are not in a recession?  Are gas prices too high?  Can America support more refugees and immigrants?

How?

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt - A Political Connection

According to the Associated Press, they do: Barack Obama is the ninth cousin to Brad Pitt, and Hillary Clinton is Angelina Jolie’s ninth cousin twice removed.

Other surprising links made by researchers at the New England Historic Genealogical Society were that Hillary is a distant cousin of Madonna, Celine Dion and Alanis Morissette,  while Obama can call George W. Bush, Dick Cheney and Republican rival John McCain cousin too.

Find out who else who seems to share the same family tree.

And if you’re in the mood for a chuckle - check out the photos over at I’m Not Obsessed that commemorate the recent discovery.

Harry Potter Headmistress Minerva McGonagall Breast Cancer

maggie_smith Double Oscar-winner Maggie Smith is reportedly undergoing treatment for breast cancer.

The 73 year old actress, who plays deputy headmistress Minerva McGonagall in the Harry Potter films, is said to be undergoing radiation therapy around filming of the latest movie in the series, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.

Reports indicate she’s dealing with it bravely and quite well.

Ms. McGonagall is one of my favorite characters in the Harry Potter series.  I certainly hope she pulls through with great ease.

Bill Clinton & Brad Pitt Making a Difference

Brad Pitt was joined by former president Bill Clinton for the start of Brad’s Make It Right project. Brad started Make It Right to build 150 new homes for Hurricane Katrina victims.

"We hope to see a huge change here in the next six months," Pitt told locals as he signed autographs and posed for photos.

Pitt’s Make It Right project in the Lower 9th Ward was the site for the Clinton Global Initiative University, a three-day program that kicked off Friday.

It’s sad that here we are this far out from the wrath Katrina took and it’s still in enough shambles that so many volunteers are needed.

It’s not like New Orleans is going to go away!

Jennifer Lopez Reveals Twins Names

Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony’s newborn twins are named Max and Emme, Lopez’s manager Simon Fields officially confirms to People Magazine.

I’d read lots of rumors fluttering around the blogosphere that Max and Emme were the chosen names but nothing had been confirmed until the very recent breaking news.

Adorable names.  Max is actually one of my son’s middle names.

I wonder how long until People is sharing images of the new little family.

Kansas Baptist Church Intends to Picket Heath Ledger’s Funeral

Jesus wept

Westboro Baptist Church, a radical Baptist church in Kansas known for picketing the funerals of fallen soldiers who served in Iraq has publicized intent to protest Heath Ledger’s memorial service claiming the actor died and is in Hell because he played a gay character in “Brokeback Mountain.”

One of the biggest reasons I stopped attending and practice my faith in a way I believe ‘my God’ would have me practice.

How terribly disturbing that people can conduct themselves in such horrific ways in the name of Christ.

It makes me very ashamed of so many that call themselves Christian.

Fred Thompson Drops Out of the Presidential Race

Fred Thompson has officially dropped out of the race. Guess I can refrain from going over his issues report?

Anyone care to place a bet on who will drop out next?

Sometimes some people should just stay with what they do best - like acting.
